M  I’m saddened by seeing my friends having triybke seeking legal advice, being charged and not knowing what they can expect from that lawyer

V  I recommend getting a written contract or engagement letter first.  Get in writing what you will receive for a specific amount of money.  If they cannot give you a written contract, run, don’t walk out the door. 

Should an unknown necessary action be needed, get that in writing and the additional cost of that.   You may chose to take the work they propose and shop for another legal resource. Check bar association websites for credentials and disciplinary records..  Get a lawyer who specializes in the area of your need.

M  Be bold.  No contract, no check.  Vet lawyers as you would any other service you need.
