Boomerang Children
I’m Miriam Neff, and I’m Valerie Neff Hogan, with Wise Women Managing Money.
M Households are changing. Empty nesters have been replaced with ‘doubled up’ families of adult children and even adult grandchildren moving in with grandma. Boomerang young adults move back.
V Our advice: Talk before the move back. Start with a written agreement. It’s not just space and kitchen responsibility. It’s noise levels at all hours. Set an end date, and financial responsibilities.
M Everyone needs to contribute. If work is skewed, mess makers vs mess cleaners, friction grows. From my experience, there is no smooth ride. Yes, compassion and understanding grows, a positive in the long run. Expect some bumpy days.
